Thespis 10th Anniversary Celebrations

The Thespis Festival is an international festival of university theatre, held in Jerusalem for the 10th year. Theatre companies from acting schools in Israel and abroad make their way to this annual event, which is a celebration for students and theatre lovers in general. The Thespis festival was initiated by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which produces it in collaboration with the Department of Culture at the Jerusalem Municipality. It is also sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and Mifal Hapayis.

This year the festival marks its 10th anniversary and will therefore be particularly rich and unique. The festival days are a celebration in Jerusalem: five days of multiple performances held in different venues in Jerusalem as well as colourful street performances, creating an atmosphere of a happening and theatre celebration which takes over the entire city. With the years, the Thespis festival has become a fascinating cultural event, drawing massive audiences and bridging the gap between Israel’s artists of tomorrow and theatre artists from different cultures around the world.

In addition to the four foreign groups taking part in the festival from the USA, Bologna, Venice and Prague, the festival also includes performances from the best acting schools and theatre groups in Israel: Nissan Nativ, Bet Zvi, the Kibbuzin College, the Hebrew University, the Haife University, the School of Visual Theatre, The Arab-Hebrew Theatre of Jaffa, the School of Sophie Moskovitz, the Tel Aviv University, the Netela Theatre, the Kombina Dance Co., the Bar-Ilan University, the Fools’ Theatre and the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance.

The festival director, Prof Isaac Benabu from the Department of Theatre Studies at the Hebrew University, expresses his great satisfaction from the participation of foreign groups in the festival and from the positive response of theatre groups in Israel. “The festival has become a major cultural event for theatre lovers, and I am certain that this year we will once more enjoy the best performances and welcome many spectators, who will come to take part in and enjoy the festival.”
