Numerous research and documentation projects dealing with Jewish theatre and performing arts exist across Europe. In addition, many European countries have theatre groups, festivals, theatre studies departments, courses and organizations that devote themselves to fostering research and productions of Jewish theatre. However, it is nearly impossible to keep in touch with the entire myriad of activities.
In response to this need, the International Institute for Jewish & Israeli Culture initiated a collaboration with the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at UCL (the largest department of its kind in Europe) to create a research and documentation centre that will act as a hub for European Jewish theatre and performing arts. This centre, utilized by scholars and artists of Jewish and European culture, theatre professionals, Jewish education and culture leaders and the media, aims to:
• Create an innovative research, documentation and learning centre for European Jewish theatre and performing arts • Organize an annual international symposium and convene workshops and exhibitions • Develop an academic curriculum in Jewish theatre studies • Supply a platform that will encourage and foster the creation of contemporary and original Jewish theatre in Europe
This three-year project, sponsored partly by European funds, will serve as a corner stone for the development of the Virtual Museum of Jewish Theatre and Performing Arts. During 2007/8 we are working on a survey to map and collect contacts and information into an interactive database within the All About Jewish Theatre network.
