As Bar-Ilan University enters its Fiftieth Anniversary there are plans to celebrate the event with an International Jewish Theatre Festival. The Festival will mark also the starting point of a new program of Jewish Theatre Studies within the Department of Comparative Literature. The anticipated schedule for the Festival is summer 2006.
What is Jewish theatre?
Jewish Theatre is a general term that addresses a vast variety of subjects and creative activities with Jewish interest and Jewish values. Jewish Theatre is not necessarily created by Jewish artists but it has to deal with some aspect of the Jewish culture to be included in the Jewish Theatre Studies program.
To illustrate the point here is a sample of the topics to be studied in the program:
Jews and Judaism in Elizabethan drama
Jewish theatre during the Enlightenment
Mysticism in Jewish plays and theatre
Famous Jewish playwrights of our times
The Holocaust in plays and theatre
Jews and Judaism in the Israeli theatre
The Bible in the Theatre
Women in Jewish plays and theatre
Jewish theatre and Jews in the theatre
Sephardic Jewish theatre
American Jewish theatre
Enclosed please find a letter from the President of Bar-Ilan University, Prof. Moshe Kaveh, addressed to potential University friends that can help us make the above plans come true. The letter is self explanatory and I hope to be contacted by you in the near future.

------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friend.
I would like to introduce you to a new and very exciting program to be inaugurated as part of the curriculum of the Department of Comparative Literature at Bar-Ilan University: Jewish Theatre Studies. The program is designed to attract students interested in academic research of theoretical and practical aspects of theatre and plays reflecting the Jewish experience.
Bar-Ilan University, Israel's largest academic community (over 33,000 scientists, students and staff combined), nurtures a tradition of excellence in scientific and academic research, while seeking to inculcate among its students a deep commitment to Israel and Jewish continuity. Bar-Ilan's unique formula blends tradition with advanced technologies and scholarship, and teaches the compelling ethics of Jewish heritage to all. Indeed, Bar-Ilan University stands at the vanguard of efforts to revitalize Jewish learning for the twenty-first century and to rebuild Jewish identity.
I strongly believe that it is most appropriate for this unique program of Jewish Theatre Studies to be offered by our university.
Now, I would like to introduce you to Dr. Dan Ronen, the initiator and the driving force behind the program. Dr. Ronen is one of Israel's leading scholars and experienced theatre directors teaching, researching, writing and directing Jewish Theatre. Bar-Ilan University is proud to have been chosen by Dr. Ronen as the center for his creative and academic work but we need your help.
In recent years, the government has announced significant reductions in state funding for all Israeli universities. Consequently, in order to build and maintain a new program, such as Jewish Theatre Studies, we must rely on our friends around the world to rise to the challenge and open their hearts to assist us.
As Bar-Ilan University enters its Fiftieth Anniversary this year we would like to celebrate the event with an International Jewish Theatre Festival to mark the starting point of the new program as well.
We've authorized Dr. Ronen to represent Bar-Ilan University in raising funds and donations for the Festival and the Jewish Theatre Studies program. I trust that with your help it will be launched and active in the near future.
Sincerely,
Prof. Moshe Kaveh, President - Bar-Ilan University
